The silver/gold in the yarn "disappears" when knitting - making a lot of mess but also making the yarn less beautiful. I wonder if the rest will disappear when washed?

I absolutely agree with you. Oriental will be the first yarn I will dispose off because almost all the gold has come off and has created a big mess all over the house. And it was so expensive.
